UK: LONDON: KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN VISIT

(25 Nov 1996) English/Nat

King Hussein of Jordan, on a private visit to London, said Monday he was concerned at Israel's failure to conclude a deal with the Palestinians over the issue of Hebron.

But he added he remained optimistic about the Middle East peace process.

King Hussein addressed reporters after a meeting at the London offices of the Jewish Chronicle newspaper.

SOUNDBITE:
'Your Majesty, has the peace process run out of steam?'
'I hope not.'
'How optimistic are you, sir?'
'I'm always an optimist and I hope that, er...'
'Are you concerned that there's no agreement on Hebron?'
'I am concerned that it has not been concluded as yet, but I hope it will. It must.'

The King was then driven back to his hotel.
