Peg Bass Cover

RIP Walter Becker.

I literally just finished recording this cover when I popped over to Facebook only to learn that Walter Becker had died. Such a loss. I’m not going to write anything about myself or my approach to the cover here at this time, maybe later on. I just wanted to put this up to commemorate his passing. So glad we got to see him perform a few times.

“Peg” by Steely Dan off of their “Aja” album which came out in 1977.

I will ask your forgiveness for my finger-style slap impersonation.

EDIT: I started learning this song last weekend because a fellow who came to the guitar show to see me (his name was Kurt) asked if I’d planned on doing any Steely Dan covers and, as often happens, the seed was planted. I don't think he has a YouTube channel, but he said that he watched my videos and made the drive from Philadelphia to meet me at the show. I was so appreciative, I bought him a little lunch which is where we had our nice chat. A lot of Steely Dan's bass lines have an improvisational feel to them and are fairly non-repetitive which means, they are difficult to learn and memorize. Also, as I've said before, there are a few bands that I like very much, but just for listening to and The Dan was one of those bands. This song seemed pretty straight forward, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I should say that I put more of my own style into this cover than I normally would. The obvious part is the finger-style, faux-slap part I came up with for the chorus. I tried to get the right notes and syncopation to emulate the line. But I also put more syncopation and finger-style "funk?" into the verses as well. He plays with the octaves once and a while but I incorporated them into a bit of my own thing...it's in the neighborhood of what he's doing but it's not as "exact" as I normally try to make my covers. He actually does a bit more of what I'm doing during the guitar solo. It's strange that I would choose this song to put more of myself into.

The bass is the Spector Legend which was quite inexpensive, but I didn't really like the way it sounded when I got it. I'm not a big "mod" guy and really don't like stepping on to the slippery slope of swapping out pick-ups but, before giving up on the bass, I thought I'd give it a shot. I believe I go into a more in depth explanation in my "Sister Disco" video which was the first (and only?) video I've done with this bass.

Oh, and of course, the Great Chuck Rainey played the bass on this song.
