I remember the day the letter came through the post. I was shaking as I opened it, so nervous that it would be a rejection letter. But it wasn’t!! I’d been accepted to one of the best colleges in the country and I just burst into tears. I couldn’t believe this was happening to me!! Life was finally going to get better, or at least so I thought. I never could have imagined what would happen next…

You see, me and my sister Ellie are orphans. Our parents died in a plane crash when I was 5. It was the worst thing that ever happened to us, and honestly, I don’t think we’re really over it yet. My aunt had taken care of us ever since then, and even though she’s always been good to us, she is really poor. She could barely afford to feed us, so since we became teenagers, both me and Ellie had been working for a rich family. I took care of their kids and Ellie did all the cleaning. They paid us enough so we could at least have some pocket money, but Ellie still complained. She said it wasn’t fair that I had the easier job. She thought I just played with the kids, she didn’t understand how hard it was to get them to focus on their homework and stuff. Also, I had a boyfriend and Ellie didn’t, and she was definitely jealous. I always offered to let her join us when we went to the movies, but she would just glare at me and say she didn’t want to be anyone’s third wheel.
So, when I received the college acceptance letter, I left it on my desk drawer and decided to wait until the weekend to tell my sister and aunt. I needed a few days to process it first. But then I never got the chance to celebrate with them…
I only had a few weeks left of high school before summer vacation, so I was working extra hours to save money. Ellie had been off sick the past few days, so I was working overtime to cover for her. The night before I’d stayed super late cleaning up after the family had a dinner party. I was feeling pretty tired as I walked up the street towards their house. And then I stopped. There was a police car outside. I quickly ran to the house, worrying that something must have happened!! My boss and his wife were standing speaking to the cops, and then when they saw me, they started screaming at me not to come any closer. Suddenly the cops were running at me and handcuffing me. I had no idea what was going on. Then my boss started shouting that I’d been stealing money from them for a year now, and they’d just discovered it. I didn’t understand…what money?? They’d given me a credit card to use for school supplies and stuff for the kids, but I’d always given them the receipts…
