Family Doctors in China

The Chinese government recently unveiled guidelines to extend the family doctor system nationwide. The introduction of family doctors is expected to provide huge opportunities for independent institutions offering medical and information management services, and will aim to provide every family across the country with a qualified family physician by 2020. Some say the move will reduce healthcare costs and make it more accessible to the public. But does the plan hold up against scrutiny? And what's driving the Chinese government's efforts to push through medical reforms? We discuss these issues and more with Fang Hai, Professor at the China Center for Health Development Studies in Peking University; Evelyn Fang, Director for the United Family Healthcare Center for Primary Care Education and Practice in Beijing; and in Boston, Dr. William Hsiao, the K.T. Li Professor of Economics at the Harvard School of Public Health.
