Y62 S5 Patrol wheels and tyres - Offset & 35s - HGT new rig build Garage Life
There is no doubt that when building any 4wd the wheels and tyres make the most difference. Both visually and capability wise.
With our Y62 series 5 Nissan Patrol build, tyres were at the front of the list but not so much wheels. Why no wheels? I actually like the factory Patrol wheels. But when it came to offset they are seriously lacking.
The factory wheels are an 18” x 8” positive 40 offset. What this means is they sit well within the wheel arches of the Y62 Patrol. The wheels we went with are a KMC Mesa in an 18” x 9” with a positive 18 offset. This sits 35mm further out than the original wheels.
Also because the wheel is an inch wider it makes the tyres appear a little wider in the way it sits on the rim. This off set creates an aggressive stance and has the tyre side walls poking from the guards. All the tread of the tyre sits with in.
The Tyres we went with are a Kumho MT71 Mud tyre in an 295/70r18. These are a very aggressive mud tyre and definitely have the road noise to prove it. The overall diameter (OD) should be somewhere around a 34.3” tyre. With the 30mm height increase I believe the real OD is much closer to 35”.
The factory Patrol tyres are a 265/70r18 with an OD of around 33”. They are a very tame Bridgestone non aggressive all terrain tyre. They are a good option but just have no wow factor.
So is this the perfect tyre and wheel combination for an Y62 Patrol? No, well not for everyone. Se wheels and tyres are a very personal preference. My opinion an 18” x 9” +18 wheel will be perfect once I lift mine.
As for the 295/70r18it is a great tyre size option because you can fit the spare wheel in the factory spot and they are still a decent size increase. Also its a legal increase in my state. The down point is they do use more fuel.
Any way that’s just my opinion, what are your thoughts on the perfect y62 patrol wheel and tyre combo?
