Superstition ain't the way: Kylie Sturgess at TEDxPerth
Why does superstition pervade our culture? Why is it so hard to shake? When is it harmful? Kylie Sturgess discusses these questions and details her own struggle with a fear of bridges and the quirky superstition that allows her to cross them.
Kylie Sturgess is an award-winning podcaster who investigates and reports on paranormal and pseudoscientific topics and how they intersect with popular culture. Kylie has lectured on teaching critical thinking, feminism, new media and anomalistic beliefs worldwide. In 2010 and 2012 she was the MC of the Global Atheist Conventions, and more recently has lectured at the New Zealand Skeptics Conference on science communication and skepticism.
In 2011, she published a book of podcast transcripts, The Scope of Skepticism and was awarded the Skeptic Magazine's Ockham Award for best podcast that year. Other projects include the 365 Days of Philosophy site, social media coordinator for IFLSLive in Sydney and social media wrangler and science blogger for ScienceRewired.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
