The Mahakumbh (also called Maha Kumbh Mela) is one of the largest and most sacred religious gatherings in the world, celebrated by Hindus in India. It takes place once every 144 years and rotates between four holy sites along rivers:
1. Prayagraj (Allahabad) - at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati
2. Haridwar - on the banks of the Ganga River
3. Ujjain - along the Shipra River
4. Nashik - near the Godavari River

Significance:
• It is believed that taking a holy dip in the sacred rivers during Mahakumbh cleanses one of sins and leads to salvation (moksha).
• The event has deep spiritual importance, attracting saints, sadhus, pilgrims, and millions of devotees from all over the world.

Legend:

The origin of the Kumbh Mela is rooted in the Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean) described in Hindu mythology. When the gods and demons churned the ocean to obtain amrita (the nectar of immortality), a few drops fell at these four places, making them spiritually potent.

Types of Kumbh Melas:
1. Maha Kumbh Mela: Every 144 years at Prayagraj
2. Ardh Kumbh Mela: Every 6 years
3. Kumbh Mela: Every 12 years at other locations
