Doom #1 - Atop the Fourth Wall
Suddenly I understand why the designers never had this guy talk in the actual game...

RUMINATIONS: I recall there being a bit of a kerfuffle at the time by fans of Doom that I used a scan for the review... and then it was pointed out that the comic was available FOR FREE from official sources and that I acknowledged that very same legal source for it. Unfortunately, it's such a while ago that I can't remember the details and it was such a non-issue that I can't be bothered to think of anything else about it. It IS a shame I had to use scans for it, but honestly the comic really is rare and even the reprints were hard to find.
The "Alone in the Dark" sequence, for those unaware, is a reference to the crossover I had then-recently done with Spoony and the Nostalgia Critic where we reviewed Alone in the Dark. Seen here: http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thatguywiththeglasses/nostalgia-critic/11343-alone
It was done partially just for the joke idea but also because I hadn't done a two-parter in a while and thus hadn't done a Previously On segment, so I felt a big cameo-fest featuring people shooting in the dark would be great. Mike J's was, of course, the best, though props go to Ed Glaser getting the cast of Press Start in on the fun.
The Doom comic is honestly a so-bad-it's-good kind of thing and aside from the fact that it's not in first-person perspective, it's fairly faithful to the Doom experience: go around and shoot things. Closer to it than the movie, at least. I also recall writing the script for this while sitting outside doing some spray-painting for props, possibly all the handgun/machine gun props I ended up using.
As I mentioned in the Silent Hill: Dying Inside alternate endings, by this point I had figured out Mechakara's backstory and motivations. He hadn't had a real appearance in a while, though, so it was time for him to show up again to remind people he was still around. As such, him going for the magic gun was there just to offer a clue as to his actual goals.
