My First Home Audio Receiver - NEC AVR-1000 Review

Since it's getting close to 30 years old, I decided it was time to show off my first home audio receiver, the NEC AVR-1000. This receiver is a four channel design, rated to deliver 100x2 plus 50x2. At the time, most Dolby Surround receivers had 10 or 15x2 for the rear channels. Also, this model was rated to handle 4 ohm loads on the front channels at 150x2, again, unusual for receivers at the time. Most would choke, overheat or go into protect with 4 ohm loads.

I purchased this receiver in 11/89 from a local Lechmere that was going out of business. The price had been slashed 40% off MSRP and with a strong suggestion from my brother, I decided to pick up this receiver instead of the Sony AV920 I had planned on buying. I still to this day, hate the push button volume controls on the NEC, but I'm glad I chose this over the Sony as I doubt the Sony would have survived the abuse the NEC has over the years. I would use this receiver to power a car audio speaker box (4 ohms) in the back yard so we could jam while playing basketball or riding our BMX bikes.
