"As soon as I'd just closed my eyes to sleep, we woke up to the rubble, black dust, gunpowder, and the sounds of screaming. We got up to run away but found that the rubble had closed the door of the house. We could not leave or go anywhere. The children were feeling suffocated. We went back into the house, going inside (the indoor area). There is no safe place to go, it is neither safe inside the house nor is it safe outside the house."

STORYLINE:
Palestinians mourned on Wednesday those killed after Israeli airstrikes on Deir al-Balah in the Gaza Strip, with mourners praying together next to bodies wrapped in white shrouds.

People gathered around the bodies at the Al Aqsa Hospital where one man was seen holding the bodies of children, and another man kissed the face of one of the dead.

The main hospital in Gaza’s central city of Deir al-Balah says it has received 128 people dead on arrival after an Israeli bombardment late Tuesday and early Wednesday in the city.

Airstrikes hit several family homes sheltering dozens of people in the densely populated Nuseirat refugee camp and elsewhere in Deir al-Balah, south of the Israeli army’s combat zone.

Al Aqsa Hospital has become overwhelmed by a flood of wounded and dead Palestinians in recent days as Israeli airstrikes escalate in central and southern Gaza and as patients are evacuated south from northern hospitals that have become encircled and besieged by Israeli tanks.

More than 11-thousand Palestinians have been killed, two-thirds of them women and minors, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

The ministry in Hamas-led Gaza says it has been unable to update its count since November 11 because of the health sector’s collapse, but that the toll has risen sharply since.

Hospitals continue to report deaths from daily strikes, often dozens at a time. Those numbers do not include the 2,700 people that the U.N. estimates to be buried in the rubble.

The war erupted on October 7 when several thousand Hamas militants burst across the border into Israel, killing at least 1,200 people and taking hundreds hostage.
