2 Punch-Out games beaten with 1 controller in 21:32!!!

I got a new personal best for beating Mike Tyson's Punch Out & Super Punch Out at the same time while using the same controller! This is currently the fastest I've ever been able to pull off this challenge run.

This run started off as a pretty silly idea in 2017, where I was in the AGDQ 2017 casual room trying this out with 2 Wii's which had Animal Crossing on one of them (with NES Punch Out as a furniture item), and the other Wii had Super Punch Out on the Wii Virtual console.

The idea was to use a Wavebird controller on both Wii's at the same time with 2 receivers set to the same channel, which worked, but I needed to have the controller very close to the receivers to minimize dropped inputs. It was a super rough first attempt at it, but I barely scraped by. You can check out that run here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0xyQuivmsU

After that, I was encouraged to submit this run to Calithon, so I ended up trying to route it, only to find that it's total chaos with how random both games are. However, I did figure out that staggering the games between cutscenes and active fights are critical in allowing me to still accomplish speedrun strategies, so I started to approach runs like that, and wow, the difference was night and day.

Eventually, I decided to submit this to AGDQ 2018, but in order to feel comfortable with it, I asked my good friend Omnigamer to help construct a controller splitting device which would allow me to plug in an actual Super Nintendo controller, and distribute the input to an original NES and an SNES at the same time. This was huge, because it prevented me from having to worry about dropped inputs! The controller is also mapped as a normal SNES controller for SNES, but for the NES, it was mapped in the following way...

Y = B
B = A
Start = Start

This was mainly mapped this way, because the SNES controller mapping just so happens to already be routed this way internally. It also just so happens to maintain the same type of punch being mapped to the correct button for both games (assuming default controls). This also presents the obvious challenge of the Start button being used for both star punches in MTPO, but will pause SPO. This can lead to dangerous situations, because MTPO cannot be paused, which means you have to be mindful of when you throw star punches, and how many Start presses you have at any given time in SPO until your fight becomes "active" again.

I had set a PB for this challenge run by practicing for AGDQ 2018, but my stream barely worked in running these two games at the same time, because the capture cards I had at the time had driver conflicts, so my PB video was kind of hideous as a result. Because of my recent attempts at doing MTPO IL's in conjunction with Animal Crossing on the Switch, I finally figured out how to do proper recordings of 2 consoles while also streaming those 2 consoles. Speaking of streaming, I got this live on my stream, so if you're interested in my live reactions and commentary, you can check out the VOD here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/656211315

I think I'll try uploading my other 2p1c runs next week, just to have it archived on my channel.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy this run!
