‘Un-elected’ foreign entity Facebook trying to ‘bully’ Australian government

Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says Facebook’s decision to ban Australian news content from its platform is clearly a ploy to “bully” the Australian parliament into “only approving laws” it favours.

“No one elected Facebook, they’re an overseas-based company, they’re not Australian and there’s no way, in my view, that the Australian parliament should be threatened of pushed around," he told Sky News.

“I am confident we will push forward with these laws and I encourage all Australians to look for alternatives if Facebook is going to treat Australians like this.”

Mr Canavan encouraged Australians to use other social media platforms such as Twitter or Parler which is now back online after being blocked by big tech following the January 6 riots.

He said Facebook was concerned about setting a precedent by adopting the media bargaining code which could lead to similar laws being enforced across the world which would amount to serious costs for the company.

“Facebook is trying to make an example of us."
