🇷🇺 Russia - President Addresses General Debate, 75th Session
Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, addresses the general debate of the 75th Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 22 – 29 September 2020).
In a video message, Russian President Vladimir Putin today (22 Sep) told the General Assembly’s General Debate that the Security Council should “continue to serve as the cornerstone of global governance, which cannot be achieved unless the permanent members of the Security Council retain their veto power.”
Putin said, “such a right pertaining to the five nuclear powers, to the victors of the Second World War, remains indicative of the actual military and political balance to this day.”
Most importantly, he added, “it is an essential and unique instrument that helps prevent unilateral actions that may result in a direct military confrontation between major states.”
Turning to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian President said, “building on the scientific, industrial, and clinical experience of its doctors, Russia has promptly developed a range of testing systems and medicines to detect and treat the coronavirus, as well as registering the world’s first vaccine, Sputnik-V.”
He said the Russian Federation is “completely open to partner relations and willing to cooperate” and announced plans “to hold an online high-level conference shortly for countries interested in cooperation in the development of anti-coronavirus vaccines.”
Putin said, “we are ready to share our experience and continue cooperating with all states and international entities, including in supplying the Russian vaccine, which has proved to be reliable, safe, and effective.”
On the long-term economic consequences of the pandemic, he said “it is already evident that it will take a really, really long time to restore the global economy. Furthermore, even the proven anti-crisis measures will not always work.”
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 1,115,810 confirmed cases and 19,649 deaths from the virus in the Russian Federation.
The Russian President’s comments were pre-recorded and aired in the General Assembly Hall as previously agreed by the General Assembly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the inability to gather world leaders in New York as customary, this year’s General Debate will witness the largest-ever participation of heads of states and government in UN history.
