the rock world would be shocked when
Jani Lane the frontman of the hair metal
group Warrant passed away in 2011 at the
young age of 47 when he was found dead
on August 11th 2011 he would leave
behind a wife two daughters and two
stepdaughters and his death wouldn't
shock everyone in the rock world though
with his business manager Sharon Chamber
remembering he'd been falling off the
wagon for years anybody that knows him
knows that this is nothing new and you'd
wonder if you were gonna get that phone
call now despite these comments Sharon
didn't believe that Jani was intent on
ending his life saying he went to motels
to sober up I spoke to him the Tuesday
before and he was in pretty good spirits
he had things that he wanted to do and
unfortunately drinking always got in the
way the 80s were a kind decade to Jani and
his band warrant but as the 90s rolled
around hair metal became extinct once
grunge took over and warrant would be
undone by a combination of several
things including lineup changes poor
sales and record label politics leading
Jani to leave the group and unlike a lot
of rock stars Janie's success was the
root of his problems he seemed tortured
by his success he always let it be known
that despite being an accomplished
songwriter he would only be remembered
for one song the hugely successful 1990
song Cherry Pie from the group's album
of the same name he blew the song off as
a gimmick and here's what he told vh1 I hate that song. I
had no intention of writing that song the
record was done the record was called
Uncle Tom's Cabin and Donnie and I
rolled up and said I don't hear the
single you've got to give me a single like
love in an elevator I need something
like that so that night I wrote cherry
pie sent it to him he lived with it a bit over
the weekend and all of a sudden the
album's called cherry pie the records
called cherry pie I'm doing cherry pie
eating contests the singles cherry pie
right if I'm lying I'm dying
and my legac's cherry pie everything
about me is cherry pie I'm a cherry pie
guy I could shoot myself in the head for writing that song and it wouldn't be just the
song that haunted him but his appearance
in later years made it clear that he
wasn't taking care of himself and fan
comments on news websites would poke fun
at his appearance of letting himself go
and it got to the point where he appeared
on vh1's reality series Celebrity Fit
Club and successfully completed the
fitness regimen and by 2008 though it
looked like he had turned a corner
rejoining warrant but shortly after the
reunion he fell off the wagon again and
six months into the reunion tour warrant
announced he was out of the band and in
June of 2009 he would be arrested for a
DUI resulting in him getting three years
probation
but the following year in May of 2010 he
got another DUI resulting in him losing
his license for three years and going to
court-ordered rehab and Lane would be
playing for a short period of time in
another 80s hair metal group called
great white but things unraveled but it
wasn't clear why great white guitarist
Mark Kendall said Janie was a complete
professional he was never late and the
fans were saying that he hadn't looked
or sounded so good in 20 years and I
have to agree and despite his recent
success with great white in early 2011
he canceled all dates on an announced
solo tour and just disappeared and his
disappearances often lasted for weeks
at a time and really wasn't unusual for
him but this time was different as he
would pass away and he allegedly had
been frequenting LA area hotels in the
weeks before he died and a typical
Rockstar fashion he trashed one of the
rooms so badly it resulted in a banning
lane would be found dead with a note on
him that read I'm Jani Lane and a phone
number and police later revealed that
friends often left such notes on Lane
who didn't carry formal identification
in case someone found him unconscious
and it would be known that he died of
alcohol poisoning and though there were
pills and a half a bottle of vodka found
at the scene preliminary autopsy results
were inconclusive
his manager offered some thoughts
thinking maybe he was just tired of
fighting his body had enough and he
didn't have that will I believe he was
on prescription meds but it was nothing
nefarious I know others in the industry
are rethinking their behavior
after this and Mark Kendall echos
certain sentiments saying Janie wanted
to be a sober man and besides the
working relationship we had something
else in common
we're both alcoholics we were good
friends and I tried to
