Replacing Valve Cover Gaskets: 1993 Lexus SC300, 2JZ-GE non VVT-i
Valve cover gaskets are replaced on a 1993 Lexus SC300 (2JZ-GE Non-VVTi) due to excessive oil present in the spark plug valleys and on the passenger side of the block. Don’t blink because this video covers the complete job from start to finish in about 11 minutes. Continued below...
A word of caution: The Lexus SC300 is a magnificent car, but something this old (20 years+) now contains many plastic parts that have become BRITTLE over the years. Be extremely careful with wire insulation, rubber gaskets and electrical connectors that may crack or crumble . Be watchful not to drop broken pieces into critical areas such as spark plug holes and camshaft /valve areas.
Tools required (but limited to):
-Combination wrench set
-Socket wrench set (both ¼” and 3/8” drive) wrench set with
assorted extensions and swivels
-Large crescent wrench
-Torque wrenches:
ft*lbs
in*lbs *recommended for the valve covers
-phillips and slotted screw driver set
-long nose pliers
-plenty of degreaser, brake or carb cleaner
-plenty of rags
-RTV silicone oil and heat resistant (Permatex Ultra Black Gasket
Maker was used in the video)
- optional: Aircraft paint remover, high temp primer and paint if you
choose fix up your covers.
*
Valve cover gaskets are made by Felpro (FEL-PRO VS50669R)
*
A few items that you might want to replace while you’re in there that are not covered in this video are spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, vacuum/coolant/fuel hoses, PCV valve, and PCV valve grommet.
*
In addition, every part that you removed should be inspected and cleaned, especially the EGR valve and EGR pipe, which can have a build up of carbon over the years. You may want to have a set of wire pipe brushes on hand.
