Chaos in Gabon: President Ousted After Controversial Third Term | Military Takes Control"
In a stunning turn of events, the president of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba, has been placed under house arrest following a military coup just hours after he claimed victory for a controversial third term. In a video message released shortly after the takeover, Bongo called on the people of Gabon to “make noise” in his defense.
But the noise came from elsewhere.
Soldiers swiftly appointed General Brice Oligui Nguema, head of the powerful Republican Guard, as Gabon’s new transitional leader. The junta nullified the election results and imposed a nationwide dusk-to-dawn curfew.
This marks the ninth coup in sub-Saharan Africa in just three years, coming on the heels of last month’s power grab in Niger. The international response has been swift—the United States, France, Nigeria, and the African Union have all condemned the coup, as investor confidence plunged and Gabon's dollar bonds suffered sharp losses.
With 2.3 million citizens watching closely, Libreville now finds itself at the center of Africa’s growing wave of political instability.
