In this video, we’ll explore the different configurations of electronic switching devices.
🔹 What are Poles & Throws?
🔹 Types of Switching Configurations (SPST, SPDT, DPST, DPDT)
🔹 How they function in circuits?
Let’s get started! 🚀
🔧 Poles & Throws in Electronic Switching
Whether it’s an electromechanical relay or an ordinary switch, both are designed for switching electrical connections.
🔹 A movable contact is required to open & close the circuit.
🔹 This movable contact is called a Pole.
🔹 The possible connections a pole can make with fixed contacts are called Throws.
🔌 Common Switching Configurations
Switching devices are categorized based on Poles & Throws, leading to four common configurations:
1️⃣ SPST – Single Pole Single Throw
2️⃣ SPDT – Single Pole Double Throw
3️⃣ DPST – Double Pole Single Throw
4️⃣ DPDT – Double Pole Double Throw
They are commonly abbreviated as SPST, SPDT, DPST, and DPDT. Let’s break them down!
⚡ 1. SPST (Single Pole Single Throw)
🔹 1 Movable Contact (Pole)
🔹 1 Fixed Contact (Throw)
🔹 Switches only one connection at a time.
💡 Example: Standard ON/OFF switch for simple electrical circuits.
⚡ 2. SPDT (Single Pole Double Throw)
🔹 1 Movable Contact (Pole)
🔹 2 Fixed Contacts (Throws)
🔹 Can handle two connections at a time.
🔹 One contact is Normally Open (NO), and the other is Normally Closed (NC).
💡 Example: Relay circuits, Selector switches, Toggle switches.
⚡ 3. DPST (Double Pole Single Throw)
🔹 2 Movable Contacts (Poles)
🔹 2 Fixed Contacts (Throws)
🔹 Equivalent to two SPST switches working together.
🔹 Can switch two circuits ON/OFF simultaneously.
💡 Example: Main power switch that controls both Live & Neutral.
⚡ 4. DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw)
🔹 2 Movable Contacts (Poles)
🔹 4 Fixed Contacts (2 Pairs of Throws)
🔹 Equivalent to two SPDT switches working together.
🔹 Can control two separate circuits, each with NO & NC contacts.
💡 Example: Motor direction control (Forward & Reverse), Relay-based automation.
🔑 Key Takeaways
✅ SPST: Simple ON/OFF switch.
✅ SPDT: Switches between two circuits.
✅ DPST: Controls two connections together.
✅ DPDT: Two SPDT switches in one for advanced control.
