Still Serving, Different Uniform | Matthew Purkey | TEDxDayton

The struggles of today’s veterans are numerous and deeply rooted; from accessibility of services to suicide, the entire community is affected by this phenomena. But what if the solution is as simple as continual service in which the veteran and the community both benefit? This talk shares a personal journey of coming from the threat of post service mental instability to becoming an executive at one of Dayton’s largest philanthropic organizations.

Matthew Purkey is Vice President of Resource Development at United Way of the Greater Dayton Area, PhD candidate, and United States Marine Corps veteran. Along with his wife Amanda, daughter Micah, and son Ezekiel; Matthew is a proud resident and community activist in East Dayton. He is an alumnus of the City of Dayton’s Neighborhood Leadership Institute, and a current member of Leadership Dayton, Dayton Business Journal 40 under
40. He serves on countless boards and committees including The Victory Project, AXUS, PowerNet of Dayton, and the recently implemented Miami Valley Young Professionals Alliance.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
