Based on the poetry of Hans Kaltneker, the Op. 18 Lieder were largely intended by Korngold as character studies for his forthcoming opera Das Wunder der Heliane. They are much more harmonically advanced than most of his previous lieder and have an eerie chromaticism about them, leading some critics to suppose they were deliberately written in an Impressionist mode. They are, however, the most operatic-sounding of the composer's art songs and were first performed in Vienna in March 1926, having been dedicated to his critic father when written.
