How To Pack A Vinyl Record - TheRecordDude - July 2020

This is my updated version of how I pack and ship vinyl records. I've found that this method works well and has records arriving safe in great condition. I've continually improved this process to what this video shows. Years ago, I would use the standard perforated mailers, which work well, but aren't as strong and are - honestly - rather expensive. When I began receiving records in the mail with the newer rip-top record envelopes, I had the idea to 'build' my own boxes.

The process of packaging records securely had initially been done by sandwiching an album between two cardboard pads, bubble wrap, tape, then boxing using the standard white perforated boxes so I had already been sort of building a "pre-box" by using the two pads and bubble method. Once I saw the records arriving from Amazon and other large record outlets in those rip-top envelope-style boxes, I knew I could make my own. Finding a source of cardboard first was a bit difficult at first - I needed clean cardboard that was uniform. The local Habitat for Humanity stores always sell boxes of various sizes that are overruns for local factories, I used some of those for a while but found the supply to not be reliable... and the cardboard sometimes either too thick or too difficult to work with. Then I had the bright idea of trying out boxes from WalMart. Since these stores litter every town in America, I figured it was a great supplier for my cardboard demand. Turns out it works fantastic - you can't get cardboard cheaper 'landed' and you can buy these boxes in whatever amount you'd like. Its been great. I've been using this method to pack records now for over a year.

My packages have finally been honed down to just under half an inch thick usually and are double cardboard padded, fit the record in question perfectly and are double taped at the edges to avoid moisture intrusion should the package be left out in the rain. I use a lot of tape because - well - its cheap and it makes for a sturdier box. It takes 5-7 minutes to make a box once you get good at it - could be faster if needed. You can also use this process to further incase a box in more layers of cardboard if needed - I often do this when sending a record worth more than $50 as a courtesy. The more layers of cardboard, the stronger the box!

I've simply found the process of boxing records rather relaxing honestly and don't dread it. I make sure to get records out the same day they are ordered to keep all customers happy and usually this helps if a grading condition ever arises. If you're going to sell records, sell them as you'd like buying them. I do my best every single time... just figured I'd post this video to anyone out there wondering how to pack vinyl. To me, this is the most efficient and effective way. I'll be posting other videos as to how to pack other sized records and media soon.

Thanks for watching!
Mike
