Arms sale proposal to Taiwan, Trump refused twice to say he would go through with it.

Asked about his own arms sale proposal to Taiwan, Trump refused twice to say he would go through with it, telling reporters aboard Air Force One “I’ll make a determination over the next fairly short period.”

This happened during a press gaggle on May 15 as Trump flew back to the United States after meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

The reporter reminded Trump the package was his own proposal, and he still gave no commitment.

The moment carries serious weight because the arms package in question is worth over 11 billion dollars and was authorized by Trump himself in December, making it the largest Taiwan weapons deal in American history.

Beijing has consistently pressured Washington to abandon it, and the summit with Xi was widely seen as a moment where Taiwan’s security could become a bargaining chip in broader trade and diplomatic negotiations.

The fact that Trump declined to reaffirm his own proposal immediately after sitting with Xi is the clearest public signal yet that the deal may be reconsidered.

A bipartisan group of senators had urged Trump before the trip to make clear that American support for Taiwan is not up for negotiation.

His two-word deflection suggests that assurance was not given.
