Miami Dolphins Team Physicians: A Day in the Life

With off-season training programs, Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and mini camps, National Football League athletes have to keep their bodies in top physical condition year-round. And that means injuries can occur at any time.

That is why the team at Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute, the official sports medicine provider for the Miami Dolphins, doesn’t take time off during the off-season either.

You may only see them on game days if a player gets injured, but the team physicians continue to manage any chronic or acute medical condition that occurs during both the season and the off-season.

[A Day in the Life: Miami Dolphins Team Physician]
Dr. Gautam Yagnik:
Hey, it's Dr. Yagnik with the Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute. We're here at the Baptist Health Training Facility with the Miami Dolphins in Davie, Florida. Let's take a look inside.
[Baptist Exercise facility]
Dr. Gautam Yagnik:
So here we are at the training room. This is where I spend a lot of my time, as well as the other physicians. It's where we see the players, evaluate injuries, and check in on their treatment.

Dr. Gautam Yagnik:
The medical team is made up of healthcare professionals from physicians to athletic trainers, to our strength and conditioning staff, as well as our sports science staff, all working together to give the best possible care to the players.
Dr. Gautam Yagnik:
Things don't really slow down for us in the off season. The NFL schedule is really a year long schedule now. So we attend the NFL Combine where we assess all the draft eligible players. In April, the draft comes around. There's also free agency as well as OTAs and mini camps.
Dr. Gautam Yagnik:
So I don't just treat professional athletes. Most of the people that I take care of are just regular people like you or me that suffered an injury while at work, or playing recreational sports. But our patients do take comfort in knowing that they're getting the same high quality care that we give to professional athletes like the Dolphins.

Dr. Gautam Yagnik:
Hey guys, Dr. Yagnik, or Dr. G as the players call me, signing off here at the Baptist Health Training Facility. Hope you enjoyed getting a sneak peek behind the scenes tour of the facility.
