3 reasons why singing makes you healthier and less stressed.

Singing is a great method for processing the daily stresses of our lives. Like walking, singing can be a widely available skill and health tool that can be good for you. Its proper functioning is a good indicator of a properly functioning body.

Singing is an ancient way of communicating that relays information and emotion at the same time. From singing at church to singing “happy birthday”, singing is a part of our everyday lives.

You may not know, however, that you can use singing as a way to release stress and anxiety. Here are three reasons why singing (no matter your skill level) improves your mental and physical health.

1. Singing is a creative act – When you are singing you are using your body in a “lightly focused” way. Singing requires focus but is not dangerous. It allows your body to relax while occupying your mind in a task. Creative acts put you in a “flow” state, which changes your perception of time and increases your relaxation level.

2. Singing helps you physically process emotions – A fist pump, a jump for joy, a clenching of the jaw. When you feel emotions, it gets processed through your body. We all know that one song that makes us feel that particular way. By singing emotionally appropriate songs we are using our body to help process strong emotions.

3. Singing is the original “breath-work” – Singing requires you to breathe out longer than you breath in. That regulation of breath is great to deal with anxiety and calming of emotions. You can use singing as a way to calm yourself down.

Singing is an underrated health tool that can improve your life if you give it a chance. Next time you are in the shower or belting a song alone, know that you are improving your mental and physical health at the same time.
