Dwight Hawkins, "Hey Whiskey," // GemsOnVHS™
Well, it is turning out that our little Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/gemsonvhsfriends) has proved more useful to this documentary project than i'd originally intended. Yet again it was through the power of suggestion that I stumbled across another fantastic artist in the community of songwriters, musicians and weirdos we have cultivated there. It was a planned trip to North Carolina that led me to ask about talent out that-a-way, and someone answered with an old, grainy, low-fi video of Dwight Hawkins playing some swingin' ragtime on an unknown street corner. I reached out to see if we couldn't make contact.
Dwight answered the call, and before long I was shipping out to Raleigh, North Carolina to meet the stranger. It quickly became apparent that Dwight leads a very, let's say, interesting lifestyle. He'd just got out of a fresh night in the slammer, due to a misunderstanding after riding freight through Georgia. His first request was that I bring some beer, so I arrived equipped. He wasn't equipped with his own guitar at the time, so we procured one from his roommate to use. We spent the first night dumpster diving donuts, touring the neighborhood he called home, and trading songs, stories and tall tales. The next day, he calmed his shaky hands long enough to bang out this one here on the back porch, and another that evening with an incredible mandolin player that I can't wait to share. After I filmed this, I found that Dwight has crossed paths with just about everyone in the east-coast folk music world, and each person had their own tale to tell, for better or worse. Truly, Dwight is a character.
Dwight is trying to get his resources in line to put his music online,
