At Coamo exit towards Aibonito (Rt. PR-14) is the Padre Iñígo bridge or Palmarejo bridge, one of many iron bridges installed in Spanish times. All of these bridges were designed here but built in Europe (usually in Belgium), from where they came by boat. The pieces were transported in bullock carts to the place and there they were assembled under the supervisory eye of the engineer who designed them, in this case Raimundo Camprubí, father of the Spanish writer and feminist Zenobia Camprubí, in turn wife of Juan Ramón Jiménez. The Padre Iñigo bridge, which takes its name from the historian Fray Iñigo Abadd y Lasierra, was inaugurated in 1879. Due to its length, it is supported in the center by an impressive pilaster or stone column that rests on the bed of the Río Coamo and which 130 years later it remains in perfect condition. Being very narrow for two lanes of cars, the bridge was replaced by a modern concrete one, but it remains there ... painted, renovated, waiting for someone to cross it and remember it.
