ASM Hydrasynth - a Roland RS-505 / CS80 emulation patch and my top sleeper synths in 2022

This is my top list of sleeper synths, meaning you get much more than you pay for in 2022. If you like me can’t afford a Juno 60 (like everyone), an Oberheim or Sequential synth these days, these are my bang for the buck picks:

Korg DW8000 or 6000: Amazing free running digital oscillators through analog filters. It sounds huge and is even though editing is a bit an undertaking, the results can be utterly great. Highly underated, very cheap.

Roland XP30: 90’s galore, thousands of great and well blending presets. To my ears, a really modern synth these days (90’s are back). Especially great for wonderful pad sounds and glassy acoustic strings, that are kind of adorable. JV1010 is a great alternative in a tiny rack format.

ASM Hydrasynth: Just wow, an extremely versatile, deep and expressive instrument. Can do practically anything you want it to, and the Oberheim Xpander inspired modulation system is wonderful and intuitive - Most fresh sounding synthesizer in many years. It is affordable because you get so much synth, and used prices are good.

Digitech Studio Vocalist: a fantastic digital and glitchy polyphonic vocoder, great for the Imogen Heap sorts of things. It’s got a really wild formant filter on the individual voices, that sounds absolutely great. Very musical sounding machine.
