R1917 Site BBC: First dive
BBC Site is a beautiful collection of smoking chimneys teeming with life. The white patches are bacterial mat, the chemosynthetic bacteria that form the base of the food web. Most of the animals that live here rely on these bacteria to survive and cannot live anywhere else, such as the Alvinoconcha and Ifremeria vent snails. These occur in well-disguised patches, look closely and you will see Alvinoconcha has what looks like fur over its shell. Ifremeria shells are taller without fur. The orange coating on the snail is iron oxide from the vents. Check out the second dive at BBC for more critters! - Rachel Boschen, cruise biologist.
