How much does the Basset Hound weigh?
➡️ It depends if they're European Basset hounds or American Basset Hounds.
The weights of this short-legged, dense boned (in fact Basset Hounds have the densest bones of any other dog breed!), can weigh anywhere from 35 to 100 lbs. (not a fat 100 lbs.!). Other naïve Basset Hound “experts” will claim these hounds should weigh between 50 to 65 lbs.
But I’ve owned many and they’ve been all over the place in weight.
My last male Basset Hound weighed 90 lbs.

The Basset Hounds have big feelings that can get hurt easily (so please don’t show them this satirical video – I don’t want to see any Hound Dog tears!).
➡️ They’re very even keeled and make great pals for small children and adults alike.
In fact, as I’m tying this, my 6-year-old daughter is using him as a chair while watching TV…and he hasn’t budged. Basset Hounds are a great choice for a family pet with small children.

Who has the best scent of any dog?
➡️ Well, if you ask most people, they’ll say the Bloodhound. But I beg to differ.
The Basset Hounds sense of smell can keep up every bit with the Bloodhound. They’re just more selective on what they want to waste their smell on. Food is their vice…and sleeping…and drooling…and being underfoot in the kitchen…. Back to food.
The Basset Hound is very prone to over-eating and gaining weight. This is no bueno for these dogs (or any dogs for that matter). Basset Hounds can develop severe joint problems and hip dysplasia. I recommend a Raw Diet for the Basset to keep their weights in check.
Trust me, you want to feed these guys balanced raw meals!

Bassets come in a variety of colors.
➡️ Most are tri-color of some sort. I’ve never seen a solid black, white, lemon, or red Basset.
If you look at them closely most have three colors somewhere on their loose folds. If not three, at least 2…but probably three!
Gray or Blue Basset are very undesirable and associated with many genetic health problems. Adopt these dinghied color Bassets if you must, BUT NEVER BREED THEM!
