Volkswagen TDI common rail timing belt: Save $1000 or more!

Today we're doing something a little different. My wife has a 2011 Jetta TDI Sportwagen with over 100k on the clock. We need to change the timing belt, but since I've never done one of these I've been sorta dragging my feet. But with the help of a dieselgeek.com kit we tackle this project head on!

Overall, it's a daunting task but very doable for someone in their garage with some basic hand tools and a few specialty tools. At www.dieselgeek.com they have the specialty tools, and all in it cost right around $400 for the tools, timing belt, new tensioner, idlers, water pump, and all the new torque-to-yield bolts. The dealer charges right at $1600 for this service, and it only took us 6 hours to do!

I found a great step-by-step guide for free at http://pics.tdiclub.com/data/500/CR_Timing_belt_procedure_Rev2.pdf Check it out!

I have no affiliation with www.dieselgeek.com, and paid full price for their kit. I just want to say thank you for putting out a quality kit with excellent tools at a great price. Check them out if you're in the market to do this yourself.
