7 Orchid care tips and strategies that are easy to understand and put to use

An orchid is a special plant, not only by the way it looks, but also by the way it is taken care of. And let’s agree, an unbloomed orchid can’t make your living space look better.
A general advice is, before buying an orchid it is better to find out information about what it is needed for the orchid to thrive. After successful experimenting on one orchid only then you can expand your orchid collection.
And if you decided to look after an orchid, here is what you need to know.
1. Choose smart and start with little:
There are many types of orchids, and for a start, the right orchid would be the one that is less demanding and more suitable for indoor growing. The most easiest type of orchid to look after is Phalaenopsis, and it would be a good start.
2. No Direct Sunlight
Orchids are tropical plants therefore they do like light, but direct sunlight. Therefore it is recommended to place the orchid in front of the window that faces east or west. However Phalaenopsis can face North as well.

3. Correct watering
People make a common mistake by overwatering the orchids thinking it’s a tropical plant and that it needs a lot of water. In reality there is no need to water your orchid more than once a week. The best method to water the orchid is to submerge the roots into water for 20 – 30 minutes, or spray the orchid softly. Make sure the water is not too cold.

4. Feeding equals growth
Absolutely all orchids need fertilizers. It is recommended buying fertilizers that are specially designated for orchids. Fertilizers are added into water once a month during the active orchid growth only.
5. Changing the pot
Orchids need their pots to be changed every 2 years. You have to be very careful because the roots could be damaged during the process. Fill the new orchid pot with new growing medium. Before moving the orchid you need to trim all the dried and unhealthy parts of it. The end of trimmed parts must be sprinkled with cinnamon solution. After repotting, water the orchid for 3 days straight and add the fertilizers in a month.
6. Mind the right temperatures

Orchids love mild fluctuation between day and night temperatures. At night temperatures should vary between 12 -18 degrees Celsius ( 54 -64 degrees Fahrenheit). And during the day the temperatures should be 4 to 5 degrees Celsius higher (or up to 80 degrees Fahrenheit).

7. Trimming the flower stems

When the orchid flowers withered it is needed to trim the flower stems in half, under the second or third node, so in this manner your orchid will flower again soon.
