A look back at the last time the Taliban ruled Afghanistan
The Taliban was last in power in Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001. Their rule was brutal and repressive. Women had virtually no rights; they were barred from education and forced to wear clothing that completely covered them. Music and other forms of media were banned.
With the fundamentalist group taking over again, Afghanistan could be a “humanitarian crisis in the making.” There’s little doubt that the group wants to confine women to their homes, end mixed-gender education and bring back a society with Islamic law at its center.
