Viva Pio XII (Long Live Pius XII)
Pope Pius XII was the 260th Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church. He reigned from March 2, 1939, to October 9, 1958, leading the Church through the turbulent years of the Second World War and the beginning of the Cold War.
Before becoming pope, Eugenio Pacelli spent much of his ecclesiastical career as a diplomat. His final post before his election to the papacy was Secretary of State of the Holy See.
Between 1939 and 1945, Pius XII was involved in efforts against Nazism. He maintained contact with the German resistance and was connected to three separate plots to remove Adolf Hitler from power, although none ultimately succeeded. He also assisted Allied soldiers, particularly downed airmen, by allowing them to hide within Vatican territory before helping them escape and rejoin their units. His actions were considered sufficiently disruptive to the German war effort that Hitler reportedly ordered the kidnapping of the Pope in 1943. The German general assigned to carry out the order instead warned the Pope.
After the war, Pius XII elevated three German bishops to the College of Cardinals. These bishops were known for their resistance to the Nazi regime.
Pius XII also quietly instructed Catholic institutions to protect Jews from persecution. Under his direction, monasteries and convents opened their cloisters to shelter Jews in hiding. It is estimated that these efforts helped save a large proportion of Italian Jews during the war. Nevertheless, he has often been criticised for not publicly condemning the persecution of European Jews more forcefully. This criticism later became one of the foundations of a Soviet-backed disinformation campaign aimed at damaging his reputation. The campaign proved highly influential, and even today, many people still refer to him as “Hitler’s Pope.”
Pope Pius XII was also strongly opposed to Communism. In 1949, the Holy Office, under his authority, decreed that Catholics who professed the atheistic and materialist doctrines of Communism could be excommunicated as apostates from the Christian faith. To this day, that decree has never been formally revoked.
In the ecclesiastical life, Pius XII invoked Papal Infallibility in declaring the dogma of the Assumption of Mary.
Pope Pius XII passed away on October 9, 1958, due to acute heart failure. He reigned for 19 years. He was declared venerable by Benedict XVI.
