Dicussion | SCOPA to lay criminal charges against former RAF CEO, Collins Letsoalo
Collins Letsoalo's career in public institutions has long been marked by controversy.
In 2017, he was dismissed as Acting CEO of PRASA following allegations that he had irregularly approved a massive salary increase for himself.
Years later, as CEO of the Road Accident Fund, he found himself at the centre of mounting governance, financial and accountability concerns.
In December 2024, Letsoalo launched a public attack on attorneys and a University of Pretoria law professor, accusing them of being part of a campaign to "capture" the RAF.
By 2025, Scopa was investigating allegations ranging from governance failures and questionable accounting practices to excessive expenditure.
Among the revelations was testimony that the RAF spent around R8 million a year on security for Letsoalo, despite a board-approved fringe benefit cap of just R480,000.
We examine the allegations, timeline of events and what this latest development means for accountability in South Africa's public sector with a panel of guests:
Whip of the ANC Study Group on Standing Committee on Public Accounts, CEO of the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA), Wayne Duvenage, and Chairperson of the Personal Injury Plaintiff Lawyers Association (PIPLA), Justin Erasmus.
