Master Plan: Environmentally sustainable living in Melbourne terrace house

Ever dreamed of living in an environmentally responsive home, in the location of your dreams? This Melbourne family did just that, in their beautiful Northcote terrace house.

This home is a stunning example of sustainable and innovative architecture. In this video, Ben Callery from Ben Callery Architects takes us through the various design elements of the environmentally conscious home.

The owners of this house wanted to stay in this location, which they have lived in for some time, without compromising on their environmental values. Important parts of the extension were opening up the home to allow more light in, and also including eco-friendly design features.

The terrace house has a heritage overlay, meaning that any extension or renovation was not allowed to be seen from the street front and that the heritage integrity of the facade needed to be maintained. This provided a challenge for Ben, and is what sparked the idea of creating a void space at the rear of the home.

This void space gives the house a second level, with large windows providing plenty of natural light into the downstairs spaces. It also gives enough space for an open plan upstairs office with a rooftop balcony.

And, to meet the needs of the sustainability conscious owners, the house features passive design techniques and active solar panels on the roof. Ben says that the home generates the electricity that it uses on an annual average. And with so much natural light from the windows, outdoor and indoor blinds have been utilised so that the residents can control temperature levels without electricity.
