The opportunist 'revolutionary' government

Emperor Nero responded to the Zealot liberation of Jerusalem by dispatching Gaius Cestius Gallus, the governor of Syria, with the Roman XII Legion ("Thunderbolt") to retake the city.

Failing to penetrate the Zealot defenses, Cestius Gallus withdrew from Jerusalem towards the coast but was ambushed at Beit Ḥoron by the Jerusalem Zealots under the command of Elazar ben Shimon HaKohen.

The Roman XII Legion was defeated by Elazar & shamefully lost their aquila (standard) to the Judean guerrillas, along with a significant quantity of gold & arms.

Following the victory, figures from the Judean ruling class established a "revolutionary" government in Jerusalem to declare independence, with the secret intention to negotiate with Rome for better policies in Judea.

Due to the arms & wealth he obtained from the battle of Beit Ḥoron, Elazar ben Shimon was included in the new government but not given any real power. While the elites could support an armed struggle against the OPPRESSIVE Roman regime (so as to pressure the empire for a more benevolent style of rule), Elazar & his Zealots saw themselves as fighting the FOREIGN Roman regime (that had no right to rule Judea).

The provisional government ultimately marginalized Elazar & appointed officers it could control to lead the revolt in different parts of the country.

But following the fall of the north & the betrayal of Josephus (appointed by the opportunist government to command the north), Elazar's Zealots - together with Yoḥanan ben Levi's Galilean fighters - would take control of Jerusalem & establish a new regime based on the revolutionary principles of the Zealot 4th Philosophy.
