Off-loading is also sometimes referred to as distributed cognition, or situated cognition.
Also, this episode has some particularly opinionated bits, so just wanted to mention that these are my personal beliefs, and not exactly fact. There is a lot of debate in the field regarding whether or not we are "pre-programmed" or not. Everyone accepts that the brain is "plastic", and that sections can be repurposed for other things (such as the occipital cortex in the blind), but saying that we have no pre-determined brain function-structures is pushing it a little.
I didn't really feel the need to cite any articles in this one, but there are many articles on mental rotation tasks and doing mathematical or spatial problems with or without using gestures/off-loading.
