3 days solo bushcraft trip - drying meat, beach and forrest, bedroll, sleeping under the stars etc.

3 days in Denmark - I am traveling lightweight with a bedroll and is sleeping under the stars. Multiple campsites in forrest and on coastline. Open the full video description for more information.

----------------------------

Date: August 2021

Day: 10-25°C (50-77°F)
Night: 5-15°C (41-59°F)

Hours of daylight = 18

Location: Scandinavia, the west coast of Denmark - sea, spruce/pine and hardwood forrest. Some of the most remote in Denmark, but there are in general a lot of people in Denmark, so limited how remote it can get. A lot of birds and deers etc. No bears, only a few wolves - nothing dangerous for campers.

A few questions:

1. What are you sleeping system?
I know the system under the name "bedroll". In this case, a normal synthetic sleeping bag, a normal synthetic sleeping pad and a homemade cover made from light weight oilcloth. The oilcloth is wind tight and water resistent. Most sleeping bags are not wind tight, so without the cover will it be too cold sleeping outside in windy conditions. With the cover is it comfortable - love the simplicity of sleeping under the stars and the fact that you don't have a roof limiting the view or walls limiting the feeling of being outsite.

2. What did you use to start the fire?
Birch bark from a birch tree and a ferro rod.

3. You did go on a lot of hikes - what did you do on the hikes?
Enjoyed the scenery and was looking for animals and animal tracks. It is summer here in Denmark and doing the trip was it quite hot. So it was most pleasant just to relax and go on a few hikes.

4. How much distance did you cover?
Not a lot - I did hike about 20 kilometers/14 miles give or take.

5. How did you get to the location?
A few hours by car and a few miles of hiking.

6. What are status on the nature property you bought about two years ago and what about the cabin project?
I am still the owner of the tiny nature property and it is still my home. I did build a small log cabin, but doe to local laws did I remove the cabin again and is not allowed to build another. I live in a canvas tent on the property (just a small 4P lavvu with a stove) and I am enjoying that. It is comfortable and love the fact of having a mobile home. Few expeensives sometimes equal more freedom. The plan is to stay here for the next few years, maybe longer and to be away on a lot of trips. I am not in any hurry to find somewhere else to live.

7. Will you do more blacksmithing?
Yes. I am currently moving my blacksmith shop from a friends farm and to my own property. It will take a few weeks or a few months before I can do more blacksmithing - it depends on if I chose to travel to Sapmi before or after I set up the new blacksmith shop. The shop will just be something simple inside a big lavvu canvas tent - something similar to the outdoor shop in a pit you can see in many of the old blacksmithing videos.

8. Are you still living at Morten Hilmers farm?
No. I did only stay for one winter. It was a lot of fun and very kind of him and I was welcome to keep living there... but I wanted to go back to my own property. Mortens YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYzMdQa5aD6dnKHLdBxDMkw

9. Why pack away the meat and not just leave it on the tree?
Flies. Doing summer here in Denmark is it hot and flies will spoil the meat if left uncovered. You do also risk birds or a fox taking the meat - but that is usually not a problem here. I am not afraid of it attracting dangerous animals, basically no dangerous predators in Denmark. In Sapmi is it in some areas different.

10. How long did you smoke/dry the meat and how long can it last before going bad?
About 5 hours of smoke and low heat from fire and sun. That is faster than ideal, but as long as it it completely dry and is keeps dry, will it last for years.

11. What knife and sheath are you using?
The knife blade is spring steel, the handle is birch burl and the sheath is birch bark with a wooden insert. It is just the classic "poor mans" version of what a small belt knife always have looked like in my part of the world. You can see similar knifes on the internet if you look up old exsamples of "puukko knife" and "yakut knife" The sheath is done similar to what I show in this video of making an axe birch bark sheath https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lFUV81ZOHw&t=431s just narrower and taller and with a wood insert similar to what I show in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGc_mdGBoHY&t=82s
