Carving a wall sign from oak with a 2mm titanium coated 2 flute bit - #shorts #shortsfeed #FYP

With the front surface now smooth and flat, we can carve our design into the material. For this one, I'm using a 2mm bit. As with most things, there are trade-offs. In this case, we need to use a small diameter bit to get the required detail, but small diameter bits are more fragile. That being the case, we'll slow the feed rate down to 80 inches per minute, and keep the depth of cut to 40% of the bit diameter (0.0787 inches x .4 = 0.032, but lets just round it down to 30/1000 of an inch). Just for comparison, lets consider a 1/4" bit. I routinely run them at 400 inches per minute and 50% depth of cut (though that depth of cut can be exceeded), so we can easily take off 125/1000 of an inch. It becomes clear pretty quickly that if you have a significant amount of material to remove, cycle times will go up quickly as the bit size goes down.
