2021 Kāne ʻAuana Performance | Hālau Hiʻiakaināmakalehua

The kāne of Hālau Hiʻiakaināmakalehua, under the direction of Kumu Robert Keʻano Kaʻupu IV & Lono Padilla, perform "E Kiss Kāua”.

Composed by Dennis Kamakahi in 1975, “E Kiss Kāua” is a vividly delightful mele that tells of two lovers stealing an intimate moment in the misty rains of Lanihuli. The youthful but prized subject of this mele is compared to a budding lokelani blossom that permeates the upland air.

Taking shelter under an ʻiliahi tree, the romantic counterparts are found pressed up against each other in a tender yet passionate embrace, face to face, offering in a most suggestive way..... “e kiss kāua.” This leʻaleʻa performance is a hopeful gesture looking forward to the day when we are able to delight in a genuine greeting fully equipped with honi and a fond embrace.
