DP elects Woo Won-shik as 22nd National Assembly speaker candidate
22대 전반기 국회의장 후보에 우원식… "민심 따라 국회 할일 해야"
Earlier today at the National Assembly, the Democratic Party, which won the most seats in April's general election, recommended lawmaker-elect Woo Won-shik as the next speaker of the Assembly.
Vote on whether to approve him is expected next month.
Our political correspondent Lee Shi-hoo explains.
On Thursday, the main opposition Democratic Party elected its lawmaker-elect, Woo Won-shik , as its candidate for speaker for the first half of the 22nd National Assembly.
While the DP did not officially disclose the number of votes Woo garnered it said the majority had voted in favor of him against the other candidate Choo Mi-ae .
1-hundred-69 out of 1-hundred-71 DP lawmakers-elect were present for the vote.
"It's a customary practice here in South Korea for the party with the most seats to recommend a speaker. The National Assembly then decides whether to approve the recommendation through a majority vote at a plenary session."
The DP secured a majority in the new Assembly following April's General Election, winning 171 out of 300 seats, while the ruling People Power Party secured the second most with 108.
The Assembly will likely vote on Woo's potential speakership at its first plenary session, scheduled for June 5th according to the ideal schedule outlined by the National Assembly Act.
And with the DP holding the majority, his speakership is widely expected to be approved.
Woo said in a speech following the vote, that he would prioritize the people's needs if approved to lead the Assembly.
"The people let us know their heart in this past election. The National Assembly will now follow the hearts of the people and carry out the work it needs to do."
Woo further vowed to become a speaker who works for the rights of the marginalized in society.
He is a soon-to-be five-term lawmaker, with experience on the Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee.
In a written statement by spokesperson Kim Meen-geon, the PPP congratulated Woo's candidacy, but also urged the DP to work towards cooperation.
Kim said the PPP will cooperate with the opposition to "open the door to a working National Assembly."
Also on Thursday, the DP recommended lawmaker Lee Hack-young to be deputy speaker.
