Chako and Chaki - the Famous Sparrow Couple

Chako - the Man and Chaki - the Lady,
The Sparrow Couple of Funtime Gujarati stories,
Have become a disappearing, endangered species,
In the modern, developed urban localities.

Chako - the loving abbreviation of Chakalo,
The Gujarati word for male sparrow,
And Chaki - the loving abbreviation of Chakali,
For female sparrow, the lighter one and chirpy,
Were not just stray, squeaking birds,
They were loving members of Gujarati households.

There would be at least one Chako and one Chaki,
As nicknames to a boy and a girl in every family,
And there are proverbs and sayings and slings,
Folk tales and Granny tales and musings,
Where Chako and Chaki are there,
As the celebrated central characters.

On went one such funny Funtime tale -
Chako and Chaki were a happy tree couple,
Chako went out and brought rice grains,
Chaki went out to bring dal grains,
Then, together they prepared delicious Khichadi,
Which they ate and enjoyed and lived happily ….

But now, the reckless rollers of urbanisation
Are crushing their existence to extinction,
They are a rare sight and delight and fun,
To the urban dwellers and their next generation,
Chako - the Man and Chaki - the Lady,
Are becoming characters of old, forgotten story.
