🚗 DRIVING INTO ESTONIA 🇪🇪 - SUPERB!👌 | BALTIC SEA COASTLINE 👌👍| TRAVEL
This is a drive from Riga the capital of Latvia, heading North along the Baltic Sea coastline, across the border into Estonia.
I chose to go via the coastal route as its very scenic and relaxed and stunning coastline, with beautiful little villages along the way on both sides of the border.
I took the A1 out of Riga and its about 120kms or 1 hr 45mins drive to a town called Ainazi on the Latvian side of the border and then crossed into Ikla on the Estonian side. This crossing is the Eastern most between the two countries and its not a controlled border, given its between two Schengen countries. There is simply a black and white border marker and you can put one leg in each country.
I continued driving into Estonia to a place called Kabli and stopped to get a look at the coastline, the sea and the beach. Unfortunately that's as far as time permitted on this trip, mixing the drive with business. I will say the coastal drive is just stunning, relaxed, quiet, fresh sea air, superb small villages and not densely populated at all. So many great houses all along the coast on one side of the road and then forest on the other. I would highly recommend it and I will go back for sure, to drive all the way through and up to Parnu and onto the capital Tallinn and then East to the border with Russia along the Northern coastline.
I learnt a lot reading about Estonia and its an intriguing place. I met a guy named Andrus during a stop in a small village to try the local bakery and the fresh baked bread I could smell. I sat out the back at a table about 50m from the sea, sipping a coffee and eating an Estonian pastry filled with cheese and meat and he approached me curious about what I was doing there and what I found interesting etc. He then talked about the history of the place, life under Communism, the alternative religions or forms of worship in the country and was a great insight for an hour.
I measure my visits to a place and how I rate it by the simple benchmark, would I go back ...and for Estonia that is certainly a yes as there is so much more to see and its interesting enough to warrant that.
Enterprise Car Rental in Riga allows cross border travel into Estonia and Lithuania for a flat extra fee of 30 Euro and no extra bond. That is so much easier than others who charge per country and increase the bond ten fold for each one!
Stay safe.
