Nick shares his experience of being supported by the Royal British Legion. #shorts

“Thanks to the Legion we are in the position we are in today. Without the assistance, without the help, life would be tough for the whole family.”

Nick joined the British Army after being recruited from Fiji.

His signed up because he was looking for an adventure, but after seven years he wanted a more settled life for his family.

As he transitioned to civilian life, Nick faced a new set of challenges,

“When I came out in 2007, the process was challenging. It was tough and unexpected because I knew nothing about civilian life and had limited time to prepare.”

Nick's wife encouraged him to seek support from The Royal British Legion, and it made all the difference.

We provided Nick’s family with a deposit for their two-bed flat, the first month’s rent payment, furniture, food vouchers, and guidance on claiming working tax credits, housing, and child benefit.

“The assistance made a massive difference to my personal circumstances,” says Nick, adding that without RBL’s help he would have struggled.

As a man, Nick understands that it can be hard to ask for help. However, he now encourages others not to let pride hold them back.

He says: “Sometimes as a man you have that feeling where if you ask for help, it’s a sign of weakness but we are all human beings and we all need help sometimes.

“We may not think of it at that moment in time but we all need help, and we need to help ourselves by accepting that we are just human beings.

“The Royal British Legion and other organisations are there to help and support you wherever needed.”
