Boss OD-3 or Fulltone OCD? Overdrive Pedal Comparison and Review

I’m comparing the Fulltone OCD v2 to the Boss OD-3 Overdrive to help choose which overdrive pedal is right for you.

On low gain settings the OCD can get a bit cleaner than the OD-3. Both would work well as a platform when played through a clean amp or could be used as a relatively clean boost if you wanted to use them that way as well.

When the switch on the Fulltone OCD is in the LP position, it gives more of an open dynamic fender amp type character and in the HP position gives a more compressed mid range focused Marshall/Vox British amp character.

On mid gain settings the difference mainly seems to be in the mid frequencies which are a bit more emphasised on the OD-3.
The very high frequencies on the OCD sound a bit more compressed and distorted compared to the cleaner more open high end on the OD-3.

With high gain settings I think the OCD sounds better suited to more modern style playing and has a smoother more compressed distorted character with an almost mid scooped sound. The Boss OD-3 is again more mid focused and vintage sounding and it has a cleaner less compressed top end.

Powering the Fulltone OCD with 18v instead of the usual 9v makes it a little louder, and makes particularly the mid gain settings clean up a little bit more easily using your picking attack but it still has more of a distortion character to it than the OD-3.

I think the Fulltone OCD is a bit more versatile and better for more modern sounds. The Boss OD-3 just does the more vintage overdrive thing but it does it brilliantly. It’s simpler to use with a more consistent level of compression and dynamics through the range of the drive control.
So if you want more flexibility and a more modern sound I recommend the OCD. If you want an easier to use , no nonsense vintage sounding overdrive then I recommend the OD-3.
