Hamradun - Sinklars Visa (NOR-ENG LYRICS)

PLEASE READ THIS:
This is Hamradun's version of Sinklars Visa with Norwegian - English Lyrics.

Sinklars visa (Sinclair's Ballad) is a poem written by Edvard Storm in 1781.

Some words/notes on this translation:

¹ Kringen - The place where the battle occurred, somewhat translated as "The circle".
² Lågen - A water cross in Gudbrandsdalen

³ Nøkken - A mythical swamp creature presented also in the Germanic folklore, also referred in some Celtic tales and other versions of it throughout the west.

About the translation:
Translated, compiled and written down by me and Stian Heggelund.

This poem consists of 19 stanzas, and many old Norwegian and danish words derived from Nørron literature.
It's main theme is the event called "The battle of Kringen", a conflict between Scottish mercenaries and Norwegian peasants, who took place in Gudbrandsdalen in August 26th 1612, during the War of the Kalmar.
There is an old English translation to this poem (totally different from this one), in a form of ballad consisting of rhymes and free line modification, included in the book "Feldborg's Poems from the Danish".
Since Stian and I decided to translate it from it's literal meaning on sentences, this translation consists of no rhymes, and some words derived as unique names from Old Norwegian could not be translated to an English relative name (Budstikken for instance).

The last verse of the poem took us a good amount of time to put it together. The line "Vee hver en Nordmand, som ei bliver hed ", proved to be challenging due to its poetic articulation, yet, for Stian it sounded as if any Norwegian that was not called to war could show himself to work. In his own words:

" And i'm not 100% sure about the last line since "Skue" is a word with some variation in its meaning and both work.
It could mean the monument is a sight to behold, or that the Norwegian is vigilant. "

" But I get that the last one is that the monument was raised to be a motivational boost kinda deal, to lift the spirits and to make the point that everyone can do their duty and be useful."

CONCLUSION:
Around the 13th stanza, the vocabulary got so difficult I realize that couldn't be figured only by me, so i called my friend Stian, which is a native from the Fjordane region and has a common ground with Old Norwegian by heritage. With teamwork we managed to finish the remaining verses, but still, both of us are not completely sure about the accuracy of this work.
