Managing Goat Parasites: FAMACHA Score

As the weather warms up it is a good time to start checking your goats for internal parasite issues. Cooper Sherrill, OSU Extension Assistant, along with Dr. Justin Talley, OSU Extension Livestock Entomologist, show the proper way to do a FAMACHA score.

The FAMACHA score indicates the level of anemia from 1 (low) to 5 (high)

The barber pole worm can cause anemia in goats by sucking blood when feeding. However, there are other causes of anemia in goats.

Dewormer resistance is caused by frequent deworming and can lead to fatal parasite infestations. Only treating animals when needed can slow the growth of resistant parasite populations.

For definitive results and to decide whether an animal should be treated, a fecal egg count is suggested.

Look for our next video to see how fecal samples are taken and processed in the lab.
