INXS ~ Need You Tonight/Mediate 1987 Extended Meow Mix

Michael Hutchence was born January 22, 1960 in Hong Kong to parents of Australian citizenship. His family moved back to Australia in 1972 and while in school, he met Andrew Farriss who sparked his interest in music. Michael's parents divorced in 1975 and Mrs Hutchence moved her clan to Hollywood, CA. The following year, Michael returned to Australia and looked up Andrew who was now playing in a band with two more musical Farriss brothers, John and Tim. Then the Farriss family moved from Sydney to Perth, so the band followed them in 1978. One of their roadies came up with the "In Excess" band name which was shortened to INXS which was pronounced the same. They released their first single "Simple Simon" in 1979 and then toured extensively, honing their chops until recording "The One Thing" which became their American chart debut that peaked at #30. They released their first American LP "Shabooh Shoobah" and then ran into Nile Rodgers who offered to produce their fourth LP and had a minor hit with "Original Sin" a #58 pop hit. Turning to producer Chris Thomas who helmed the "Listen Like Thieves" LP got them their first major US hit with "What You Need". They stayed with Thomas for their next LP "Kick" and were jamming in Hong Kong when they came up with the riff for "Need You Tonight" then went into a local studio to record the song. Released as a single on October 24, 1987 it took 14 weeks to reach the #1 spot. I was saddened by his unexpected death on November 22, 1997. I loved "Elegantly Wasted" a really catchy tune by a great band and a lead singer who was just as charismatic as fellow bad boy, Mick Jagger.
