I Ate Like a Viking for 7 days | What Viking Age People Ate #VikingFood #LivingHistory #Experiment
🍖 I Ate Like a Vikin🍖 I Ate Like a Viking for a Week | Viking Food History, Feasting & Experimental Archaeology
What did Viking Age Scandinavians really eat — and could I survive on their diet for a full week?
No coffee ☕. No sugar 🍬. No tomatoes, potatoes, rice, or chocolate 🍫. Just grains, dried meat, foraged herbs, and the occasional feast 🍲. In this week-long historical food challenge, I lived like a Viking woman — eating two meals a day, using archaeological evidence, saga references, and experimental archaeology to guide my menu.
From humble porridge (grautr) and onion soup to a full jarl’s feast with honey-glazed root vegetables, this video brings Viking Age cuisine to life 🛡️🔥.
Hi, I’m Megan Formanek — author of the Viking Trading Lands series and a public historian who’s spent more than a decade researching the Viking Age. And yes, that includes what they ate 🍞🍗🐟. Whether you're a history buff, historical fiction fan, reenactor, or just curious about ancient food, this one's for you.
📜 In this video, you’ll discover:
What Vikings ate (based on real historical sources)
What they definitely didn’t eat 🚫 (sorry, potatoes)
Daily meal structures: dagmal & nattmal 🕯️
Experimental meals based on archaeological finds
A longhouse feast menu fit for a moderately wealthy Norse family
Life on the road: travel-friendly Viking meals 🛶
What parts of the diet I loved… and what nearly broke me
💬 From sagas and medieval chroniclers to middens and coprolites (yes, really), I’m diving deep into Viking food culture — and tasting it all so you don’t have to.

I’d like to extend heartfelt thanks to the following resources and creators whose work informed and inspired this series:
Ribe Viking Centre (Ribe VikingeCenter) in Denmark — for their invaluable living-history demonstrations, Viking‑inspired recipes, and educational programs about Viking Age food @RibeVikingeCenterDenmark
Ursula’s Historical Recipes — the delightful reenactments of ancient recipes (including Viking, Medieval, and earlier cuisines) from Ursula channel @Ursulashistoricalrecipes
Academic and archaeological sources I referenced for ingredient lists and diet reconstruction, including research on middens, cooking pots, coprolite analysis, and isotope studies from sites such as Ribe, Hedeby, and Stevns .
Saga and medieval texts referred to throughout, including Egil’s Saga, Rigsmál, Hárbarðsljóð, and accounts by Ibn Fadlan and Adam of Bremen—key to understanding Viking Age food traditions (as highlighted in the transcript).
And, finally The Viking Answer Lady is a valuable resource for all things Viking Age. https://www.vikinganswerlady.com/index.shtml
🎥 If you love living history, Viking lore, or historical food challenges, hit play and join me on a delicious (and sometimes exhausting) journey through time.
