Populism as Politics and the Social Context of Populism

Andrew Arato lays out his conceptual definition of populism, and place the contemporary version in a historical set of stages. He then distinguishes left and right versions, and briefly present a causal model for the phenomenon in general, and the current versions in particular.

Márton Gerő discusses how various forms of crises (e.g. external or internal) strengthen or weaken the social conditions favoring populism.

Antal Örkény talks about right-wing extremism as a form of populism which is flourishing in Hungary since the outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008, and the migration wave of 2015. He discusses what are the most important explanatory factors behind right-wing extremism in Hungary, and shows the affinity of social status and perceptions of socio-economic changes to right-wing extremism.

This is the first session in the Populism in History and Theory Lecture Series.
