Electric Trailer Brake Diagnosis & Repair
I borrowed my father in laws trailer to haul some wood and after connecting trailer and driving off my brake controller started flashing red and saying short to ground (I think) so after hauling the wood I figured I would repair the issue before returning the trailer.
The very first thing to do is wiggle the 7 way plug and cord to make sure it's not there, from that point I start at the right rear and I cut the wiring and check the controller to see if the message has cleared by doing this we can eliminate the brake magnet or the wiring between the magnet and the backing plate. From here I move to the right front and cut the wiring, then if the right side yields no results the next wiring to cut is the wiring that RUNS THROUGH THE AXLE TUBE from the left to the right. It is very important to only cut the wires that run into the axle housing. If that still isn't the issue at that point you can cut the wiring for the left rear brake.The left front is the last one to check, AGAIN ONLY CUT THE WIRING THE RUNS THROUGH THE TUBE, if that didn't do it the the left front is all that's left then there you go just cut the wiring and be glad you finally got the results you wanted and then be frustrated that it was the last one you checked.
It is always best to replace the wiring from the left side to the right side by running it through the tube just as it was done at the factory, to do this solder the new wiring to the old and pull it through. I don't like the scotch lock connectors that are installed on them so I remove them all anyway and replace with heat shrinkable butt connectors.
